Claude API Credit: Free Monthly Balance for Max and Team Subscribers
Anthropic has added a monthly renewing API balance to Max and Team subscriptions. We explain who gets how much, how to link the credit, and why it doesn't apply in Claude Code.

Claude API credit is the free Claude Platform balance Anthropic gives Max and Team subscribers every month. A Max 5x subscriber gets $100 a month and a Max 20x subscriber gets $200; on Team plans, the credit calculated per seat is pooled into a single balance capped at $500 a month. The credit is meant for building your own apps and agents with the Claude API.
In short:
- Max 5x: $100, Max 20x: $200, Team: $20 per Standard seat, $100 per Premium seat (up to $500).
- The credit renews every billing period; unused credit does not roll over.
- It applies to the API, Message Batches, Console Playground, Managed Agents and the Agent SDK.
- It does not apply to interactive Claude Code sessions, extra usage, or Bedrock, Vertex AI and Foundry.
Who gets Claude API credit, and how much?
Anthropic announced this credit on October 7, 2026, together with Claude Haiku 5.5. According to the page in the help center, the credit applies to Max and Team plans, including the discounted Team plans (for nonprofits and scientists). Free, Pro and Enterprise plans are not covered.
| Plan | Monthly credit |
|---|---|
| Max 5x | $100 |
| Max 20x | $200 |
| Team, Standard seat | $20 per seat |
| Team, Premium seat | $100 per seat |
On the Team plan, the credit from all seats is pooled into a single monthly balance, and that balance cannot exceed $500. For example, a team with three Standard seats and two Premium seats gets $260 a month. If one more Premium seat is added, the credit for the next period rises to $360.
To be eligible, your subscription must be active and you must have been on an eligible plan for at least seven days. It does not matter whether you bought the subscription on the web, iOS or Android. You also don't need to add a card to Claude Console.
How do you claim the credit?
You get the credit by linking a Claude Console organization to your plan. On the Max plan, the subscription owner can do this; on the Team plan, someone with the Primary Owner or Owner role can. On the Console side, you also need the Owner, Admin or Billing role.
- Open claude.ai in a web browser.
- If you are a Max subscriber, go to Settings > Billing; if you are a Team owner, go to Organization settings > Billing.
- In the API credits section, click Link organization.
- Choose the Console organization that will receive the credit, or create a new one.
- Read and accept the Supplemental Credit Terms.
One thing to watch out for: only one organization can be linked to a plan, and you cannot change the link yourself. To change it, you have to contact the support team. So pick the organization where you will actually be doing your development.
Where does the credit apply, and where doesn't it?
Claude API credit can be used with all models on Claude Platform. Here is where it does and doesn't apply:
| Usage | Deducted from the credit? |
|---|---|
| Messages API and Message Batches API | Yes |
| Claude Console Playground | Yes |
| Claude Managed Agents | Yes |
| Claude Agent SDK (with the linked organization's API key) | Yes |
| Interactive Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop or web | No |
| Extra usage in Claude, Claude Code or Cowork | No |
| Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex AI, Microsoft Foundry | No |
The most commonly confused point is the claude -p command. If you run it with an API key from the linked organization, the usage counts as Agent SDK and is deducted from the credit. If you signed in with your claude.ai account, it is deducted from your plan limits. Runs started from a GitHub Action, an IDE extension or the desktop app count as Claude Code usage even with -p, and fall outside the credit.
The credit also does not raise your plan limits. Your usage limits in Claude chats and in Claude Code stay the same. The one-time bonus for cloud sessions is a separate promotion; we covered it in our Claude Code credit guide.
How much work does $100 get you?
The answer depends on the model you choose. The table below is our own rough calculation for a typical request with 2,000 input tokens and 500 output tokens. It does not include cache discounts or the difference created by Haiku 5.5's new token counter.
| Model | Input / output price (1M tokens) | Approx. requests for $100 |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Haiku 5.5 | $0.10 / $0.50 | 220,000 |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $2 / $10 | 11,000 |
| Claude Opus 5.5 | $4 / $20 | 5,500 |
In short, for a small prototype or an internal tool, Claude API credit will often cover a month comfortably. For high-volume jobs such as classification, summarization and data extraction, Haiku 5.5 is the model that stretches the balance the furthest.
What happens when the credit runs out?
The credit is spent before any credits the organization has purchased. Once it runs out, usage continues from purchased credit or auto-reload if you have either. If there is no other balance, API requests stop until the next monthly credit arrives. Usage is never charged to your Claude subscription.
If you use it as a team, keep one thing in mind: everyone with an API key in the linked organization spends from the same balance. To set limits per project or per person, you can define workspace spend limits in Console.
Frequently asked questions
I'm a Pro subscriber. Can I get Claude API credit?
No. The credit is given only on Max and Team plans. Free, Pro and Enterprise plans are not eligible.
Does unused credit roll over to the next month?
No. Any remaining balance is wiped at the end of each billing period, and the new period's credit is loaded shortly after the plan payment. On annual plans, the credit also arrives monthly.
Can I split the credit across multiple organizations?
No. The credit goes to a single Console organization, and each organization can receive credit from only one plan.
What happens if I change my plan?
If you move from Max 5x to Max 20x, prorated credit for the remaining time is loaded immediately. If you cancel or switch to an ineligible plan, no new credit arrives, but the existing balance can be used until it expires.
Conclusion
Claude API credit is a real development budget added to the plan Max and Team subscribers already pay for. You can start without entering a card to try a prototype, an internal tool or a customer support agent. At EngerekTech, we provide technical consulting to teams building products with the Claude API, and we share our experience on this blog.
